Shift pay calculator
Put in your base rate and the shift, and see what it is worth. The penalty maths is the part people get wrong, usually by adding casual loading twice.

The penalties, in full
These are SCHADS award multipliers, applied to your base rate. The casual column already contains the 25 per cent loading, so you never add it twice.
| When | Permanent | Casual |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday | 100% | 125% |
| Saturday | 150% | 175% |
| Sunday | 200% | 225% |
| Public holiday | 250% | 275% |
A casual on Sunday is at 225 per cent of base. That is the single biggest lever on what you earn, and it is why the shifts nobody wants are the ones worth taking.
Where these numbers come from
The multipliers above are the SCHADS award penalties and are not in dispute. The preset base rates reflect the 4.75 per cent increase that applied from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. The Level 2 figures are well established; the others are corroborated across independent payroll sources rather than read from Fair Work directly, which is why you can type your own rate over the top.
For your exact rate, use Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool. If a provider is paying you below the award, the Fair Work Ombudsman is where to take it.
Common questions
How do you calculate penalty rates?
Multiply your base hourly rate by the penalty for that day, then by your hours. Saturday is 150 per cent of base, Sunday 200 per cent and a public holiday 250 per cent. Casuals use the higher casual column instead, which already includes the 25 per cent loading: 175, 225 and 275 per cent.
Does casual loading stack on top of penalty rates?
No. Under the SCHADS award the casual penalty rates already include the 25 per cent loading, which is why Saturday casual is 175 per cent rather than 150 plus 25. Adding them twice is the most common mistake people make.
What does a sleepover pay?
A sleepover is an allowance for the night plus your normal rate for any hours you are actually awake and working. Enter the allowance your provider pays and the active hours separately.
What is the SCHADS Level 2 rate?
Level 2 pay point 1 is $36.22 an hour from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026, rising to $39.53 at pay point 4.
